Workshop Gemma shirt pattern review + upcycled project

Hey Everyone

This week I decided to raid my wardrobe as I'd singled out a few items of clothing in a recent Youtube vidster, with the aim of upcycling and making them wearable again!

I'd scoured the Foldline's pattern database for an interesting shape shirt or blouse and went for the Gemma shirt from Workshop.

I had a really beautiful kimono I bought from ASOS for my graduation showcase  but hadn't worn it since, criminal really as I just love this fabric!

I took to the kimono with my trusty razor and picked it apart.

It was such as unusual shape and as a result I had to divide the front panel in two, just so I could squeeze the pattern pieces on the fabric. The grain on the pattern is also questionable on the front but as it's such a busy print, I don't think you can notice. The back panel however is on the grain and a complete piece...hooray!

WERE THE INSTRUCTIONS CLEAR?

The instructions weren't as detailed as other indie patterns I've used but were adequate if you're not a beginner. I struggled with inserting the collar and although I made a toile and followed the instructions about snipping in to the seam allowance and making sure you match at the marked point, the collar in the final garment still wasn't as neat as I would like! Not sure if it was the pattern or me! I'll make a 3rd and update the blog with my conclusions.

WOULD I DO ANYTHING DIFFERENT?

I would add extra seam allowance as this pattern only includes 1 cm and I don't think that's enough to give the hem enough depth or weight, especially if you don't want to just overlock the edges and instead give them a neat double turn.

I also used french seams to finish the edges, so extra seam allowance would have been useful here too!

GARMENT SIZE?

UK 10

ADJUSTMENTS?

Fit-wise no.

I added extra seam allowance at the dart, as when I sewed my toile, the dart wasn't long enough to be caught in the seam allowance!

WHAT'S THE FIT LIKE?

One piece sleeve (kimono, magyar or etc). Loose around the arms and snug on the upper hip

FABRICS USED?

A viscose fabric I upcycled from a kimono I'd had for 7 long years!! It was just a cheapo one from ASOS

WOULD I MAKE THIS AGAIN?

Yes, I really like the shape. I used to wear blouses all the time and now I remember why...love them!
